Assign or Reassign a Credential

Credentials don't have to be deleted and recreated when they change hands. Community staff can move a credential between holders from Access > Credentials using three actions in a row's overflow menu — Assign, Reassign, and Unassign — available on both Brivo and HID credentials. For the rest of the credential lifecycle, see "Managing Access Credentials".

Assign — give an unassigned credential a holder

Use Assign on a credential that currently has no holder (rows carry an Unassigned badge; the Assignment filter's Unassigned Only view finds them all). Unassigned credentials are kept on file but "will stop working and be invalid while unassigned" — assigning one puts it back into service.

Reassign — move a credential to a new holder

Use Reassign to hand a credential from its current holder to someone else.

Unassign — take a credential out of service without deleting it

Use Unassign to detach the credential from its holder while keeping it on file. The credential stops working until it is assigned again. This is the right choice when a card is handed back and will be reissued later; if it should never work again, see "Delete a Credential Safely".

Tips

Need Help?

If these actions are missing from the overflow menu, your role may not include the needed credentials permission — check with your community Admin, or submit a help desk ticket.
