With auto-open, a gate of your community opens by itself when you drive up to it. You do not tap a button, and you do not need to open the app. This article is for residents.
What you need
- A gate that your community set up for auto-open. In My Doors, such a gate shows the Auto-open as I arrive switch.
- Location for MyWatchtower set to Always on an iPhone, or Allow all the time on an Android phone.
- Precise Location on, on an iPhone.
- Live Activities for MyWatchtower on, on an iPhone.
Turn on auto-open on an iPhone
1. Open My Doors.
2. Under the gate, turn on Auto-open as I arrive.
3. When the app asks for your location, allow it.
4. Go to Settings > MyWatchtower > Location. Select Always, and make sure that Precise Location is on.
Turn on auto-open on an Android phone
1. Open My Doors.
2. Under the gate, turn on Auto-open as I arrive.
3. In the Allow location all the time? dialog, select Continue.
4. On the next screen, choose Allow all the time.
What happens at the gate
As you drive up to the gate, it opens. You do not tap a button. The gate does not open as you drive away from it.
On an iPhone, your lock screen shows a MyWatchtower card as you come near, for example Auto-open: Approaching and the distance to the gate. The card also shows on a paired smartwatch. The first time, your iPhone asks Allow Live Activities from MyWatchtower? Select Allow to see the card. Without Live Activities, auto-open on an iPhone works only while the app is open.
You can still open the gate yourself at any time. Open My Doors and tap Open.

Your setting and your community's setting
Your community can turn on auto-open for a gate by default. Your own setting on the switch wins. To stop auto-open for a gate, turn off its switch.
If the gate does not open
- My Doors shows a location notice: your location is not set to Always or Allow all the time. Select Allow or Open settings in the notice to change it.
- You do not see the card on your iPhone, or My Doors says that Live Activities are off: go to Settings > MyWatchtower and turn on Live Activities.
- The gate still does not open: open My Doors and tap Open when the gate shows You are here.
